SONGSHAN

Shaolin Temple

Shaolin Temple was built in the 19th year of Taihe in the Northern Wei Dynasty (495 A.D.). Thirty-two years later, the Indian Monk Bodhidharma, known as the 28th Ancestor of the Western Heaven, came to Shaolin Temple to teach Mahayana Buddhism and became the first ancestor of Chinese Buddhism Ch'an.

Shaolin Temple has over 40 sub-temples in China. Most of them lie in the Central Plains, and each has its own separate Temple name. These sub-temples are Cao-Dong sect's inheritance, and the monks there are descendants of Shaolin Temple.
